Today Family Friend and I drove down to New Straitsville, nationally renowed as the Moonshine Capitol of the World. (Growing up, I’d always heard that anything you wanted, you could find at New Straitsville.)
Yes, there really is a working still in New Straitsville! Our guide allowed us to sample mash, which F.F. feared would taste like rot-gut. He was pleasantly surprised when his taste buds were treated to sugary sweet corn.
F.F. is such a bad influence! Before we started our road trips, fair food was not on my radar. Today, however, we both had deep fried dill pickles. F.F. bought root beer on tap, complete with tin mug. I was too cheap and bought my customary cola in a can.
Depending upon who you ask, this building is either the old jail, an old school or an old church.
Proving that we are indeed “genuises,” F.F. pointed out that it took us less than two minutes to figure out that the broken steps were actually a sidewalk.
Not to spoil the romance of “Moonshine Pie,” but my unsophisticated palate told me it was most likely based on French vanilla instant pudding.
The reason for Memorial Day:
According to http://www.heartofhocking.com/New_Straitsville_Ohio.htm, we missed a few things including New Straitsville History Center and Robinson’s Cave. That’s easily enough rectified – we’ll be back!
