I just finished a cup of hot chocolate (great!) and a chocolate cookie (mediocre, but then I like my cookies burnt around the edges) courtesy of the Starbuck card I won last week. Spanky and I have been busy all week working as Santa’s helpers.
Last Sunday I broke out the ol’ map and decided to hit the road, taking Route 23 all the way down to the Mighty Ohio. The murals on the flood way were something worth the drive (and gasoline).
First, though, was a journey across the scariest bridge on earth (or at least the most frightening one I’ve ever driven).
Back through town, looking for the murals, I stumbled across an old theatre and beautiful churches.
The flood marker made the threat of all those years ago seem real even today with the flood wall. (The next blog will feature a grave marker of a local hero during the flood.)
The murals are gorgeous, but due to the lighting (or my cheap camera) I wasn’t able to capture them the way I would have liked. Here is a link that will show them off: http://www.portsmouthohiomurals.com/.
The horseshoe mound is easily accessible inside the city limits:
Central Ohio sheriff departments don’t have need for this:
This is a good site to learn the area’s history:
